Saskatoon man avoids same fate as other claimants

Saskatoon resident Nay Myo Hein was able to avoid deportation to Myanmar during the weekend due to a last-minute intervention by a pair of federal government ministers, but more than a dozen others have not been so fortunate.

Responding to a StarPhoenix request made on Thursday, an official with the Canadian Border Services Agency said 13 refugee claimants during the past five years have been deported to Myanmar, also known as Burma.

Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan said in an e-mail Monday a blanket suspension of deportations to Burma is "not warranted."

The number alarmed the group Canadian Friends of Burma (CFOB), which was not aware anyone was being sent back to live under a military regime repeatedly condemned by Canada and other nations.

"We had no idea. Hearing that is quite shocking, quite disturbing," CFOB board member Kevin McLeod said in an interview.

"We don't think anyone should be deported to Burma. It is an arbitrary, unfair place."

Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper had harsh words for Myanmar's leaders after opposition leader and Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to another 18 months of house arrest.

"Canada is appalled by the ongoing repressive actions of the Burmese regime and its continued disregard for the fundamental freedoms and basic human rights of the people of Burma. We have imposed the toughest sanctions in the entire world against the regime to protest its treatment of its people," Harper said in an Aug. 11 statement.

"We will continue to stand with the people of Burma and insist that their human rights be respected and their voices heard."

That position was repeated in a StarPhoenix interview Sunday with Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. Kenney said it would not be safe to send Hein back to Burma, in part because of the large amounts of publicity the case generated. The regime may have taken note and targeted him because of it, Kenney said.

McLeod said the CFOB is grateful to Kenney and Van Loan for their intervention Saturday to save Hein from deportation. The CFOB, Amnesty International' s Canadian section and others believed Hein would have been jailed, tortured or executed if returned.

But McLeod wonders how the Canadian government could have deported the 13 other people.

"These people need protection," McLeod said.

McLeod would like to know if the Canadian Border Services Agency or any Canadian official is following up to ensure these 13 people are safe. Canada has no embassy in Myanmar. The closest Canadian ambassador is in Thailand and has been barred from entering Myanmar in the past, McLeod said.

Van Loan, whose responsibilities include the Canadian Border Services Agency, said in his e-mail the Canadian government "has been clear and consistent in condemning the Burmese regime for its repressive actions."

Van Loan said the issue of deportation to Myanmar "is always under consideration, " but there are no current plans to place the country on Canada's "temporary suspension of removals" list.

"There are many situations where potential political persecution is not a risk. As such, a blanket temporary suspension of removals is not warranted," Van Loan said.

"While removal of some individuals to Burma would be unsafe, those cases can be dealt with on an individual basis."

Predictable Injustice for Suu Kyi

To the surprise of no one, on August 11, 2009, Judges Thaung Nyunt and Nyi Nyi Soe found Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate, guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest. They immediately sentenced her and her two companions to three years hard labour. There have been no reports indicating whether sentencing submissions were made to the judges before the decision was reached.

ASEAN Chairman’s Statement on Myanmar

11 August 2009, Bangkok

Thailand, as the ASEAN Chair, has learned with deep disappointment that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to serve eighteen months of house confinement with limited freedom. The Chair wishes to reiterate the calls made by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers attending the 42

nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum held in July 2009 in Phuket, for the immediate release of all those under detention, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, with a view to enabling them to participate in the 2010 General Elections.

Such actions will contribute to national reconciliation among the people of Myanmar, meaningful dialogue and facilitate the democratization of Myanmar. Only free, fair and inclusive General Elections will then pave the way for Myanmar’s full integration into the international community.

ASEAN member countries wish to see Myanmar, a fellow ASEAN member, be at peace, prosperous and well respected in the international community. We stand ready to cooperate with the Myanmar Government in its efforts to realize the seven steps to democracy and remain constructively engaged with Myanmar in order to build the ASEAN Community together. We also continue to support the ongoing good offices of the United Nations Secretary-General and urge Myanmar’s full cooperation with the United Nations.

DUBLIN – Myanmar's democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on Monday was named the recipient of Amnesty International' s highest honour, the Ambassador of Conscience Award. The human rights watchdog said it hoped this would help protect her as she faces a potential prison sentence.

Amnesty Secretary General Irene Khan said the award was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Suu Kyi's initial arrest on July 20, 1989, as she led a campaign to oust Myanmar's military dictators.

Suu Kyi's opposition party, the National League for Democracy, won national elections in 1990 but the military refused to relinquish power. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 but has been under house arrest for 14 of the past 20 years.

"In those long and often dark years, Aung San Suu Kyi has remained a symbol of hope, courage and the undying defence of human rights," Khan said.

Suu Kyi, 64, is on trial for allegedly harbouring an American who swam out to her residence uninvited. The offence of violating house-arrest rules carries a potential five-year prison sentence, and foreign diplomats have been barred from key parts of her trial. Suu Kyi's supporters accuse Myanmar's junta of seeking to put her behind bars until after elections planned for 2010.

Former Czech President Vaclav Havel, a fellow Nobel recipient and the first winner of the Ambassador of Conscience Award in 2003, said foreign recognition probably has deterred Myanmar's rulers from imposing even harsher punishments on Suu Kyi.

"I know from my own experience that international attention can, to a certain extent, protect the unjustly persecuted from punishments that would otherwise be imposed. ... Goodness knows what would have happened if her fate had not been highlighted as it is again today," Havel said in a statement.

Irish band U2 is publicly announcing Suu Kyi's award Monday night at a Dublin concert.

U2 – which won the top Amnesty honour in 2005 in recognition of singer Bono's humanitarian work – has been honouring Suu Kyi at each performance of the band's European tour.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said Washington is "very seriously" concerned about military co-operation between North Korea and Burma.

Arriving in Thailand ahead of a forum on regional security, she said the relationship was a threat to stability.

She also condemned Burma's treatment of jailed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Foreign ministers from the Asean grouping, as well as EU and US envoys, are meeting on Wednesday in Thailand.

"We know there are also growing concerns about military co-operation between North Korea and Burma, which we take very seriously," Mrs Clinton said after meeting Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

"It would be destabilising for the region, it would pose a direct threat to Burma's neighbours," she said.

( historic day of Burma )

July 7 is the historic day on the page of Burma history on which the students bravely pioneered the struggle against the Burmese military dictatorship sacrificing their lives for the sake of the people. In other words, students as a whole, since this day, have been alerted to spearhead against militarism in Burma.
Military regime that came in power through military coup from democratic government and has been ruling the people under fear since March 2, 1962, has always restricted and intentionally crackdown the
every students and their activities that have always stand by the
people and fought against suppression of military dictatorship.
Adhering to the commitment of 7 July of the students in generation, today students of new generation have fought against
military regime and the popular uprising of 8.8.88 emerged. Having actively participated the old students of 1962, 1974 and 1976 as well as entire people of Burma in this uprising, it earned the international intention. It was also able to made the people aware widely of lack
of democracy and human rights under the military regime in Burma.
Furthermore, commitments to fighting against the military dictatorship were firmly developed.
No matter what kind of suppression they faced, we had to go on
fighting against military dictatorship with clear cut spirit.
We today all party and activists hand in hand with our old brother students have always been going on fighting, bearing in mind the spirit of 7 July, against military dictatorship in several means inclusive of underground and arm struggle.
We UDYL would seriously like to urge the activists in fighting
for democracy for Burma, bearing in mind the spirit of 7 July to rise our revolution highest disregarding the difficulties we encountered toward our victorious goal together with the people.
We go on fighting against military dictatorship for good that has always hindered democracy and human rights
We support and surround Daw Aung San Suu Kyi ( NLD ) who has been demanding political dialogue at all time so that national reconciliation can be found that is essential for genuine inter peace

နိုင္ေအာင္ သူတို ့အိမ္ေရွ ့မွာ လမ္းပိတ္ဆႏၵျပႀကပါ ၊ ၄င္းတို ့ရဲ သားသမၼီးေတြ ေဆြမ်ိဳးေတြနဲ ့နည္းစပ္ေအာင္ႀကိဳး

မေလးရွားေရာက္ ျမန္မာ သံရံုး အတြင္းေရး

မေလးရွားႏုိင္ငံ ျမန္မာသံရံုး အတြင္း မသမာ စီးပြားေရးေစ်းကြက္ႏွင့္ စီးပြားရွာသူမ်ား

မေလးရွားႏုိင္ငံမွာ ျမန္မာျပည္မွ တရား၀င္အလုပ္သမား ေျမာက္မ်ားစြာလာေရာက္ အလုပ္လုပ္ကုိင္ေနၾကပါတယ္။ ပံုမွန္အားျဖင့္ လုပ္အားခ တစ္ေန ့ ရင္းဂစ္ ၁၈ မွ ၂၀ သာရရွိျပီး Overtime အခ်ိန္ပုိလုပ္အားခကုိ အဓိက အားထားေနရျပီး တစ္လကုိ ရင္းဂစ္ ၉၀၀၊ ၁၀၀၀ ေလာက္ရလွ်င္ အေတာ္ေလး အဆင္ေျပေသာ အလုပ္လုိ ့ေျပာလုိ ့ရပါတယ္။ အဲဒီ ၉၀၀-၁၀၀၀ ထဲကမွ လဲဗီးေၾကး တစ္လကုိ ၁၅၀-၂၀၀ ေလာက္ႏုတ္ရပါေသးတယ္။ ျပီးေတာ့ ေန ့စဥ္စားေသာက္စရိတ္ ခ်ိဳးျခံေခြ်တာစားမယ္ဆုိလွ်င္ တစ္လကုိ ၁၅၀-၂၀၀ေလာက္ေတာ့ ကုန္ပါတယ္။

ဒါေတာင္ ေဆးလိပ္၊ ကြမ္းယာ၊ အေျခခံလုိအပ္ေသာ ပစၥည္းအေသးအမႊား ၀ယ္ယူစရိတ္၊ ခရီးသြားလာစရိတ္ စသျဖင့္ ႏုတ္လုိက္လွ်င္ တစ္လအသားတင္ လစာမွာ ၅၀၀-၆၀၀ ၀န္းက်င္ေလာက္သာ က်န္ႏုိင္ပါတယ္။ ထုိကဲ့သုိ ့အဆင္မေျပေသာ အလုပ္သမားမ်ားဘ၀ကုိ မစာနာပဲ ေခါင္းပံုျဖတ္ မသမာစီးပြားရွာေနေသာသူမ်ား မေလးရွားႏုိင္ငံဆုိင္ရာ ျမန္မာသံရံုးအတြင္း၌ ရွိေနေၾကာင္း သံရုံးအား ေလ့လာေစာင့္ၾကည့္ေနသူတစ္ဦးမွ သတင္းေပးပုိ ့ခဲ့ပါတယ္။ သံရံုးအတြင္း၌ျဖစ္ေပၚေနေသာ မသမာစီးပြားေရးသမားတစ္စုမွာ ျမန္မာႏုိင္ငံကူးလက္မွတ္ကုိ သံရံုးေကာင္တာ၌ သက္တမ္း တုိးမည္ဆုိလွ်င္ ပံုမွန္အားျဖင့္ မနက္တင္ ညေနေလာက္မွ ရျပီး အဆုိပါ သံရံုးအတြင္း၌ မသမာစီးပြားရွာသူမ်ား(ပြဲစားမ်ား)ထံ၌ မိနစ္ ၂၀ အတြင္း ရရွိႏုိင္ပါတယ္္။ သုိ ့ေသာ္ ထုိသူမ်ားအား တစ္ေယာက္လွ်င္ ရင္းဂစ္ ၅၀သာ ပုိေပးရပါတယ္။

ဒါ့အျပင္ ၀င္ေငြခြန္ မေပးေဆာင္ပဲ သက္တမ္းတုိးမည္ဆုိလွ်င္ ပြဲစားအား သက္တမ္းတုိးေၾကး ရင္းဂစ္ ၄၀၀ ပုိေပးလုိက္ရံုပါပဲ။
တရား၀င္သက္တမ္းတုိးေၾကးမွာ ရင္းဂစ္ ၆၀၀ျဖစ္၍ ပြဲစားကုိ ၄၀၀ ပုိေပးျပီး ရင္းဂစ္ ၁၀၀၀ ျဖင့္ ၀င္ေငြခြန္ေဆာင္ရန္မလုိ သက္တမ္းတုိးျပီးသား စာအုပ္ကုိ ရရွိႏုိင္ပါတယ္။ အကယ္၍ Passport စာအုပ္ေပ်ာက္ဆံုးလုိ ့အသစ္ျပန္ေလွ်ာက္မည္ဆုိပါက ရင္းဂစ္ ၁၅၀-၂၀၀ ေပးရပါမည္။ စာအုပ္ေပ်ာက္ဆံုးေလွ်ာက္ထားခ်ိန္၌ ေနထုိင္ရန္ သံရံုးမွ ေထာက္ခံစာထုတ္မည္ဆုိလွ်င္ တစ္ေယာက္၊ တစ္ေစာင္လွ်င္ ၅၀ေပးရပါတယ္။ ထုိ ့အျပင္ စာအုပ္စာမ်က္ႏွာကုန္ဆံုး၍ စာအုပ္အသစ္ေလွ်ာက္လွ်င္ ၁ပတ္မွ ၂ပတ္အထိၾကာျမင့္တတ္ပါတယ္။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ပြဲစားမ်ားထံတြင္ ေန ့ခ်င္းျပီး ရရွိႏုိင္၍ မေလးရင္းဂစ္ ၇၀၀ တိတိ ပုိေပးရပါတယ္။
သာမန္အားျဖင့္ စာအုပ္အသစ္တစ္အုပ္လွ်င္ ရင္းဂစ္ ၁၂၀၀ ဟု သတ္မွတ္ထားသျဖင့္ ပြဲစားမ်ားအား စာအုပ္အျမန္ရလုိသူမ်ားက ရင္းဂစ္ ၁၉၀၀ ေပးလုိက္ျခင္းျဖင့္ ေန ့တြင္းခ်င္း ရရွိႏုိင္ပါတယ္။
